Information page

Please read carefully this information page and privacy notice before your participation. If you disagree with any part of the information then do not participate.

The purpose of the mobile survey is to understand how citizens are coping with the coronavirus situation in Switzerland, and how a citizen science approach can both inform researchers and support citizens in information sharing and community building activities.

The description of the project can be found here: https://www.coronacitizenscience.ch/

The data that will be collected in the survey include (1) question-by-question responses to questions about how citizens are coping with the coronavirus situation in Switzerland, and (2) photographs taken by citizens that can illustrate their coping strategies, and (3) time and date when the application is used for collecting data. In addition to this, the civique platform collects metadata information that can be useful to understand the system’s operation, including the smartphone configuration (manufacturer, model, system version) and connectivity status (i.e. whether on Wifi, or a phone network). Finally, an email address is needed to create an account on the civique platform and to be able to react to participants’ possible questions or requests. We are collecting all this information because it is necessary for the performance of our tasks and is carried out in the public interest.

By using the civique platform, you will share with us pictures that you take with the Civique application. We also remind you that you shall not take pictures of another person. You must also understand that we cannot verify each picture.

The data will be collected by Idiap (Prof. Daniel Gatica-Perez’ team) and shared exclusively (in anonymized and aggregated forms) with the project partners listed on this website. Furthermore, the anonymized data will be analyzed and aggregated for visualization purposes and scientific publications. You are aware that all data analysis will be conducted on an anonymized dataset. A sample of anonymous data visualizations will appear on this public webpage, and also be used in scientific publications. A sample of the contributed photos (manually curated and anonymized) will also appear on this public webpage, and might also be used in scientific publications.

Participants who agree to participate in this study, need to install the Civique application on their smartphones, and will be asked to electronically agree with the terms of the Civique platform.

All requests can be done via email to data@civique.org.

All data will be stored on secure servers at Idiap, located in Switzerland. Only members of the Idiap team will have access to any personal identifiers (the email address participants use to create your account), which will be used solely for the purposes of sample and data management (e.g. if someone requests to have their data removed from the study). We store your data as long as your account exists.

This study has been approved by EPFL Human Research and Ethics Committee (HREC, no. 022-2020).
